The rebels would go on to Port au Prince after President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was forced to flee the country.

The Rebels took control of the city, Haiti’s second largest, the day before but continue to encounter resistance there from forces loyal to President Aristide.
  • A body is removed from the rubble of a collapsed building at the University of Port-au-Prince on January 23, 2010, in Haiti after it was destroyed by an earthquake.  On January 12th, 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake, dealing a crippling blow to an already struggling nation. Hundreds of thousands died and over a million people were left homeless by the devastating earthquake.

  • Firefighters from Engine Company 54 and Ladder 4, which share a firehouse in Midtown Manhattan in New York, NY, celebrate together just after midnight in Times Square on May 2, 2011, after it was announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed in a U.S. military strike in Pakistan.   Fifteen firefighters from the Engine Company 54 and Ladder 4 firehouse died responding to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.

Hussein, the grandson of the prophet Mohammed, is a symbol of the struggle against repression for the Shiites.   This year marks the first time since Saddam Hussein took office that the Shiites Muslims of Iraq have come together for the event without the fear repression from the now fallen regime.

Mr. Madoff  ultimately pled guilty to 11 federal felonies and was sentenced to 150 years in federal prison.
  • A US Airways jetliner, which was bound for Charlotte, NC, floats down the Hudson River off of Battery Park CIty in Manhattan after crash landing in the river just after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport on Jan.15, 2009.   After floating for down river the large plane hit land at Battery Park City where it was secured for removal from the water days later.
  • Fans of the French National soccer team react as they watch from outside a French bistro in Soho after a missed goal opportunity during the World Cup final against Italy. Their team would go on to lose the game.
